"Al.I.Cuza" University employs more than 500 full-time academic and administrative staff members.

Teachers and researchers are employed on a number of different conditions. With the Romanian term for the type of employment in brakets, the ranking is as follows:

• Professors (profesor) divide their time between teaching and research. Althrough they are not the only persons conducting research, the Professors have the overall responsability for the research carried out within their own specific fields.

• Associate Professors (conferentiar) and Lecturers (lector) teach and conduct research.

• Teaching Assistants (asistent) and Research Assistants (preparator) teach at an elementary level, but are employed as researchers to carry out specific projects.

• PhD Students are enrolled at a specific PhD programme for a maximum of four or six years, during which they prepare a PhD thesis under guidance of a PhD thesis supervisor. The PhD students may also teach from time to time.

• Secretaries (secretara) are responsable for a number of practical matters in connection with the study programmes, exams and any day-to-day information to students and teachers. The secretaries thus constitute a vital link between students and teachers and the administrative body.

Working Hours

Weekly working hours are 40 hours. Office hours are from 7.30 am to 3.30 pm on week days (Monday-Friday), which means that telephones are answered, offices open during these hours.
