Some words about Gheorghe Sincai

The National College "Gheorghe Sincai" Baia Mare

The "Gheorghe Sincai" High School was founded in 1919. This year we have celebrated its 80th anniversary. It bears the name of an important figure of the Romanian culture in Transylvania. At its beginnings, the high school had 8 classrooms, a drawing room, a staff room, a library with 10099 books, a chemistry laboratory, a physics laboratory, a museum containing 20628 items, 172 pupils and 17 teachers. Today it has 33 classrooms, 11 laboratories (physics, chemistry, foreign languages and computer science) and a library.

The new curriculum contains science, computer science, social studies and foreign languages profiles. From 1995 it was renamed the "Gheorghe Sincai" College as part of a national program. This year (1999), its name was changed again into the "Gheorghe Sincai" National College. It's an honorary title which rewards the excellent results obtained by its students throughout the years: 428 prizes at national olympiads and 26 prizes at international contests held in Holland, Hungary, Austria, Germany and the U.S.

The school has formed outstanding personalities: 4 academy members, writers, 1 archbishop, painters, sculptors and 11000 college and academy graduates. The title National College implies a wider autonomy regarding the curriculum, staff appointment, financial issues and the entrance exams. The latter has become a very selective process in order to improve the quality of those studying in this high school. All the efforts are made to employ the best teachers available and rise the standards of the educational process. The high school is entitled to issue foreign language proficiency certificates in English, French and German, with the support of the British Council, the German Embassy and the French Cultural Center and Embassy. The "Gheorghe Sincai" National College is part of the UNESCO High School Network and has the status of a pilot high school in an international programme which drafts projects and studies on different fields related to the specifics of the  Maramures county (ethnography, local government etc.) Our students have obtained exchange student scholarships in the U.S., Germany, and have made several exchanges with students in the "Koeberle" High School in Selestat, France.

We are proud to be able to integrate in the ERYC partnership programme, and would like to address an invitation to all those interested in knowing more about us to email us or, why not, visit us. We would be more than happy to introduce you to our students, the teaching staff and to present you our region with its traditions and regional specifics.
